Accessible LAMP-Enabled Rapid Test (ALERT) for SARS-CoV-2: Reimagining molecular diagnostics from the bottom up

September 21, 11:40 am12:30 pm PDT

ViralALERT was born out of the Oakland Genomics Center (ogc.bio), a shared laboratory space for biologists and biotech startups. Together with our collaborators at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, in Chile (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) and France (Center for Research and Interdisciplinary (CRI) and Hôpital Saint Louis) we developed a RT-LAMP based test for the simple detection of SARS-CoV-2. Our variation of this well-established diagnostic method incorporates low-melting waxes for the stable packaging of reactions, a magnetic wand for the easy transfer of concentrated RNA samples and multiplexing by using sequence specific fluorescent reporters (QUASR). Our methods have been outlined in detail in our recent publication in Viruses available here.

Ali Bektaş received his PhD from UC Berkeley’s ESPM in 2015. His dissertation concerned developing appropriate methods for the monitoring of transgenic contamination by people standing the most to loose from such contamination and the most to gain by monitoring, the farmers and beekeepers in southern Mexico. After graduating, he continued developing methods with his PhD advisor Ignacio Chapela, those which ultimately formed the kernel of the ALERT system. He believes that understanding the social political underpinnings of contemporary molecular biology can help us imagine an emancipatory alternative to capitalist science.
