COVID-19 in two low-income settings: South India and Monterey County

November 3 @ 11:40 am12:30 pm PST

A street scene in India with people in face coverings.

Speaker: Joe Lewnard

Low income populations account for the majority of COVID-19 cases globally and within the United States. I will discuss recent studies of the epidemiology of COVID-19 in two low-income settings. First, I will present results of a study recently published in Science presenting the first epidemiological description of the pandemic from the vantage of a low-resource country—India—including the largest contact-tracing study to date. Next, I will describe the design, preliminary results, and implementation of a study of COVID-19 among farmworkers in Monterey County, led in collaboration with Brenda Eskenazi and Ana Mora-Wyrobek from CERCH as well as Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas.

Dr. Joseph Lewnard is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. He studies the transmission dynamics of infectious disease agents and the effectiveness of interventions such as vaccination. He uses mathematical and statistical modeling and collaborates closely with investigators leading field studies and disease surveillance.
