Disruptive and Transformative: Health Policy Advocacy
From Data to Analysis to Policy to Change, through Advocacy

There are exceptions, but little is done to systematically link scholarship to policy.
Brownell and Roberto, The Lancet, February 18, 2015

Our Brown Bag presentation will discuss the class, PH 220D Health Policy Advocacy, which we have co-taught for 15 years and our APHA book, Advocacy for Public Health Policy Change, an urgent imperative, which is based on the content of our class. We will outline how and where policy change occurs in public and private settings and the strategies and tactics used to achieve evidence based policy. We will discuss the challenges and rewards, both personal and professional, of directly engaging in utilizing advocacy, at your own personal level of comfort, to improve health on a population level.

We will examine with participants why data is essential but not sufficient for achieving policy level improvements in health equity.
