Increasing access to education and reproductive health – especially family planning – are strategic, mutually reinforcing interventions that enhance self-determination for girls and women. Increasing overseas investment in these two strategies can enable donor countries and implementing organizations to mitigate the Sahel region’s security and humanitarian crises and to leverage positive outcomes.

This half-day virtual event will promote increased investment in the Sahel to uphold girls’ and women’s rights. Specific recommendations will include:

  1. Promote girls’ education to prevent child marriage, delay childbearing, and strengthen
    women’s economic contributions
  2. Improve the quality and availability of family planning services

The event will include talks by experts from the region, moderated panels and time for discussion.

We anticipate that upstream interventions to improve girls’ educational attainment and improve access to family planning will be an order of magnitude more cost-effective than the current levels of humanitarian aid and military investments that are needed to address the challenges in the Sahel. Donors and technical experts will explore opportunities for more effective and targeted aid.

This event begins on July 27, 2021 at 5:00 AM Pacific Time (13:00–17:00 London GMT)
