Making Space for Human-Centered Design and Equity in an Emergency: A COVID-19 Case Study

Speakers: Catherine Newman and Jaspal Sandhu

Since April 2020, Shield the Bay has designed and produced clinically accepted face shields for Bay Area healthcare workers, including developing non-traditional supply chains. Face shields are a critical component of personal protective equipment (PPE), providing essential barrier protection from SARS-CoV-2 containing droplets for healthcare workers interacting with COVID-19 patients. Our mission is driven by a focus on institutions located in and serving communities of color, as well as those that comprise the public safety net.

During this talk we will share translatable lessons learned from the Shield the Bay experience for applying human-centered design and centering equity in an emergency. We will also share our current work in creating fundamentally new business models for scale and sustainability. This scaling work is supported by a recent grant from the Booz Allen Foundation Innovation Fund. In addition to this grant, Shield the Bay has been supported by financial and in-kind contributions from: 150 GoFundMe donors, COSMO, Blockchain@Berkeley, the College of Chemistry, and the Oakstop Alliance. The Alameda Health System has been a key technical partner to this effort. Shield the Bay is an all-volunteer team with more than 30 contributors.
