SPH Brown Bag: From the Inside Out: (Some of) What I have learned in 23 years of Research with Youth Experiencing Homelessness

October 8 @ 11:30 - 12:30 PDT

Colette (Coco) Auerswald, MD, MS, Associate Professor in the School of Public Health at UCB where she is co-Director and co-Founder of i4Y (Innovations for Youth, i4y.berkeley.edu), a collaborative academic/community hub focused on improving youth wellbeing through structural change. She is a pediatrician and specialist in adolescent medicine. For the last twenty years, she has studied the social determinants of HIV and STD-related behaviors in marginalized youth populations (including homeless youth, low-income youth of color, and LGBTQ youth in San Francisco, and street children in East Africa); the sampling of hard-to-reach populations; the role of social networks in adolescent health; and the use of mixed methods and youth participatory action research in research with vulnerable youth. She is committed to work in partnership with communities in ways that prioritize youth voice and partnership in research. Prof. Auerswald will discuss the social determinants of the wellbeing of youth experiencing homelessness and will encourage you to examine some of the biases you may have regarding youth experiencing homelessness.
