The Wallace CoE Speaker Series: Self-Managed Abortion in the Digital Age

October 20, 1:00 pm2:00 pm PDT

We are now living in a post-Roe world, where 11 states have banned abortion, and an additional 15 states have highly restricted abortion access. As access to surgical abortion is significantly curtailed, many individuals are seeking self-managed abortion, commonly referred to as medication abortion. However, while using a misoprostol/mifepristone combination of pills to induce an abortion is widely considered medically safe, new legal and privacy risks are cropping up. Given the ability for smartphones and internet search platforms to track people’s movements, searches, and purchases, how can individuals seeking SMA safely access information when living in an abortion banned state?

The Wallace Center and The Center of Excellence in Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health at UC Berkeley will be kicking off their first speaker series taking a closer look at digital technology, infoveillance, and self-managed abortion. A variety of speakers will discuss current and cutting-edge issues in state privacy and criminal law, distribution of medication abortion in the U.S., and health policy campaigns aimed at educating the public on the availability of and access to safe early abortion.
