Police Violence and Racism: Berkeley Public Health’s Denise Herd on a Cambridge Union Online Panel
Since the killing of George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis, people around the world have stood up and protested against racism and police brutality in the US and elsewhere.
About the Panelists:
Denise Herd is Associate Professor of Public Health at UC Berkeley and Associate Director of the Othering & Belonging Institute. Her research focuses on racial disparities in health outcomes, including in terms of the legal system.
Mychal Denzel Smith is the author of Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching: A Young Black Man’s Education and a Knobler Fellow at The Nation Institute.
Ejeris Dixon is Director of Vision Change Win, a social justice consultancy. She has previously worked as founding Program Coordinator of the Safe OUTside the System Collective at the Audre Lorde Project and at the New York City Anti-Violence Project.
Alex Vitale is Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College, Coordinator at the Policing and Social Justice Project, and the author of The End of Policing.
Roy Alston is a consultant for the Institute For Intergovernmental Research, a criminal justice-focused non-profit, and previously served as a Major in the Dallas Police Department.
