The week before Spring semester, PHN and MCAH students interested in policy work visited Sacramento for a two-day policy workshop. The first day consisted of talks from the California Department of Public Health, WIC Association, California Food Policy Advocates, Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, and more. We were also lucky enough to have Assembly members Rob Bonta from Oakland and Monique Limon from Santa Barbara talk with us and answer questions. The second day, we visited the capitol building and met with assembly members or staffers to discuss issues we cared about. One group met with Asm. Buffy Wicks’ office about the housing crisis and another group went to Asm. Richard Bloom’s office about the state-wide sugar-sweetened beverage tax. It was a fantastic learning experience that instilled passion for policy work into the students!
