COVID-19: What Do We Need To Know About Airborne Transmission & The Proper Way To Wear A Mask?

Mike Botchan, Dean of Biological Sciences, and Micheal C. Lu , Dean the School of Public Health, are hosting a pandemic-focused discussion covering the current epidemiological outlook and vaccine development. The discussion will feature professors Art Reingold, Nick Jewell, Robert Tjian, Britt Glaunsinger, and guest Anu Osinusi, VP of Clinical Research at Gilead. This is an interactive discussion, questions are encouraged!

Britt Glaunsinger, PhD

Professor, Plant and Microbial Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology, UC Berkeley

Britt Glaunsinger is a professor at the departments of Plant and Microbial Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology at UC Berkeley and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.



Nicholas P. Jewell, PhD

Professor, Biostatistics, UC Berkeley School of Public Health

Nicholas P. Jewell is a professor of biostatistics who has received numerous awards and is known for “extraordinary leadership and vision in implementing strategies that enhance the disaster resistance of UC Berkeley, and universities throughout America.”



Anu Osinusi, MD, MPH

Executive Director, Clinical Research, Gilead Sciences

Anu Osinusi is an infectious disease physician and clinical researcher who is currently an executive director leading the Emerging and Respiratory Viruses group in the Virology therapeutic area at Gilead Sciences, Inc.




Arthur Reingold, MD

Chair of the Division of Epidemiology, UC Berkeley School of Public Health

Arthur Reingold has dedicated his research to the prevention and control of infectious diseases both at the national level, as well as with numerous developing countries around the world. He is chair of the California State COVID-19 Vaccine Workgroup.



Robert Tjian, PhD

Howard Hughes Medical Institute President and Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology, UC Berkeley

Robert Tjian is a biochemist at the UC Berkeley. Tjian has made major contributions to the understanding of how genes work, including the pioneering discovery of proteins called transcription factors, which regulate gene expression.



Ed Penhoet, PhD—Moderator

Associate Dean of Biology, UC Berkeley

Ed Penhoet is the associate dean for strategic planning for Biological Sciences at UC Berkeley and an emeritus professor of biochemistry and of health policy and management. A co-founder of Chiron, one of the pioneers in biotechnology, Ed served as the company’s president and chief executive officer from its formation in 1981 until April 1998.
