The SVSH Prevention Committee, sponsored by the Assistant Dean for Administration, is composed of students, staff, and faculty working together to create a safe and inclusive climate at the School of Public Health by incorporating diverse perspectives in prevention efforts.

Interested in joining the committee? Fill out our interest form here or email sph_svshprevention@berkeley.edu. We meet twice a month (scheduled to accommodate member availability) during the academic year to work on a variety of projects.
We put on a variety of activities throughout the year including trainings, panels, research talks, and community engagement activities. You do not need any prior experience in sexual violence prevention to join the committee. We welcome all who are interested to apply!

Our Activities and Impact
Awareness Campaigns and Community Engagement
- Domestic Violence Awareness Month Short Film Screening: During October, “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” the SVSH Prevention Committee hosted a virtual short film screening related to the complex and nuanced experience of domestic violence and facilitated a post-viewing discussion.
- Denim Day & Sexual Assault Awareness Month: During April, “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” the SVSH Prevention Committee hosts an in-person event on Denim Day to raise awareness about sexual violence and publicly display messages of support for survivors. The in-person event entails inviting the UCBPH and Berkeley Way West communities to take part in making a variety of creative visual arts to show support for SV survivors.
- Intersection of Sexual Violence and Eating Disorders with ANAD: The SVSH Prevention Committee co-hosted with ANAD (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders) a virtual panel discussion of survivors and experts related to the way eating disorder and sexual violence experiences often intersect with one another. - Research talk on the National #MeToo 2024 Survey with Dr. Anita Raj: The SVSH Prevention Committee co-hosted with the PATH to Care Center a research talk by Dr. Anita Raj, Executive Director of the Newcomb Institute at Tulane University focused on results from the National #MeToo 2024 Survey which describes the prevalence of a wide range of SV experiences across the United States.
- “Preventing Sexual Harassment in Your Academic Department” toolkit: The SVSH Prevention Committee collaborated with PATH to Care in 2019 to pilot this toolkit aimed at helping academic decision-makers create and implement plans to prevent sexual harassment.
- Principles of Community Statement: The SVSH Prevention Committee collaborated with the UCBPH community to develop and adopt the UCBPH Principles of Community Statement in April 2021, urging all members to embrace and practice its principles.
Training programs
- New Graduate Student Training: We facilitate this in-person training that must be completed within the first six weeks of school for all incoming graduate and professional students (excluding OOMPH and JMP students).
- New Graduate Student Instructor Training: The committee facilitates training with first-time Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) in UCBPH’s fall Pedagogy course on how to create an inclusive and respectful classroom.
- Presentation to UCBPH Staff Town Hall: Co-chair Liam Chavez presented a summary of learnings from the California VALOR conference on gender-based violence to UCBPH staff attending the town hall

Research and evaluation initiatives
- 2019 UCBPH SVSH Workgroup Report: The pilot of the Toolkit for Preventing Sexual Harassment led to a report with seven key recommendations to strengthen UCBPH’s sexual harassment prevention efforts, which were presented to UCBPH leadership.
- UCBPH MyVoice Report: The committee is developing prevention activities based on the 2018 UCBPH MyVoice Report from the PATH to Care survey, using the results as baseline data to assess progress.
- Conference Presentations: In Spring 2021, the committee presented its from the 2019 SVSH Working Group, which piloted PATH to Care’s toolkit to prevent SVSH in academic departments, at the National Conference on Health and Domestic Violence.

- PATH to Care: PATH to Care offers confidential, empowering support for survivors of gendered violence, including sexual harassment, assault, and intimate partner violence, providing free services such as resource connections and accompaniment to medical, legal, and academic appointments.
- Ombuds offices:
- Ombuds Office for Students & Postdoctoral Appointees: The Ombuds Office offers confidential support to help navigate campus-related conflicts with confidentiality maintained unless there is imminent risk of harm. For appointments call (510) 642-5754.

- BRAVE Bay Area (formerly Bay Area Women Against Rape): BRAVE Bay Area is Alameda county’s rape crisis center offering advocacy and counseling to people who have experienced sexual violence. Call the 24/7 crisis hotline in both English and Spanish at (510) 845-7273.
- Family Violence Law Center: FVLC provides survivor-centered legal advocacy and assistance for individuals in Alameda County who have experienced intimate partner violence or sexual assault. Call their 24/7 Crisis Hotline at (800) 947-831
- National Sexual Violence Online Chat Hotline (RAINN): The Online Hotline offers secure, anonymous, and confidential live chat with trained RAINN support specialists.
- Equal Employment Opportunity Commission: The EEOC enforces federal laws that prohibit discrimination in employment based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information.
- The CA Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH): The DFEH enforces California’s civil rights laws to protect against discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, as well as hate violence and human trafficking.
