Jyothi Marbin MD

Director, UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program

Dr. Marbin comes to the JMP from the UCSF Department of Pediatrics, where she served as the associate program director (APD) for Recruitment and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for the Pediatrics Residency Program; the director of the Pediatric Leaders Advancing Health Equity (PLUS) Residency Program; and co-director of the Health Equity & Racial Justice Graduate Medical Education Pathway. Dr. Marbin is a clinical professor and general pediatrician who practices at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). Earlier, Dr. Marbin worked at Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland (BCHO).

Dr. Marbin completed her undergraduate work at Brown University. Dr. Marbin received her medical degree from the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown and completed her pediatric residency training in the PLUS program at UCSF. She completed the UCSF Teaching Scholars Program in 2017, and received a post-baccalaureate certificate in ethnic studies from San Francisco State University in 2020.

Leanna W. Lewis, LCSW

Administrative Program Director, UCSF Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved (PRIME-US) at the JMP

Leanna, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, joined the JMP and PRIME-US in 2015 having spent many years as a mental health clinician at the Center for the Vulnerable Child (CVC) Department at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. For more than two decades, Leanna has worked with a culturally and socioeconomically diverse population in hospitals, schools, and community agencies. Leanna is an experienced lecturer, trainer, and consultant in the areas of racial equity, diversity and inclusion, cultural humility, and culturally responsive and trauma-informed practice. She teaches UCSF residents and faculty through the UCSF Health Equity and Racial (HEAR) Justice GME Pathway, and UCSF Pediatric Leaders Advancing Health Equity (PLUS) Residency Program.

Gustavo Valbuena MD, PhD

Head, Foundational Medical Sciences
Head, Masters of Health and Medical Sciences

Dr. Valbuena completed his undergraduate medical degree in his native Colombia and moved to Texas in 1996 to complete a program combining a residency in Pathology and a PhD in Experimental Pathology. In 2003, he returned to Colombia to design the basic sciences curriculum of a new school of medicine and to pursue epidemiological research on rickettsial diseases. In 2006, Dr. Valbuena returned to the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch where he eventually reached the level of Associate Professor with tenure. He focused his effort on education and research in infectious diseases, immunology, and vaccine development.

In 2015, Dr. Valbuena moved to the Bay Area, and he decided to completely focus his professional career on Medical Education. He joined the faculty of the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program (JMP) where he currently is the Head of the foundational medical sciences curriculum as well as head of the master’s curriculum. In addition to his duties at the JMP, he is pursuing a PhD in Health Professions Education with UCSF and Utrecht University Medical Center in the Netherlands.

Odinakachukwu (Odi) Ehie MD

Head, Clinical Skills

Dr. Ehie is a pediatric anesthesiologist whose interests include Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Global Health, as well as Education. As a UCSF Teachers Scholar in 2020, she started a diversity curriculum for anesthesia and surgery residents, and she has held a teaching position as a UCSF Bridges coach from 2017 to 2021 for the School of Medicine thus providing a foundation in the Differences Matter Initiative. Dr. Ehie joined the JMP in 2021 as the Head of Clinical Skills Curriculum.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, she completed her anesthesia residency program at New York University Langone Medical Center. She later completed her pediatric anesthesia fellowship at Stanford Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital where she focused on Global Health Education in Vietnam. Not only does she currently serve as the site co-director in Vietnam for the Health Volunteer Overseas / Society of Education in Anesthesia (SEA-HVO) Travel Fellowship, but she also serves as Designee Chair of the SEA Global Health Outreach Committee. She is currently the Chair for the California Society of Anesthesiologists Committee of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and she is the Vice Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care.

Shelene Stine MD

Head of Assessment and Clinical Partnerships
Faculty, Clinical Skills and Foundational Medical Sciences

Shelene leads the Committee for Assessment & Professionalism Standards, collaborating with JMP leadership and UCSF to integrate assessment for learning throughout the JMP curriculum, and to develop and facilitate plans to support each student’s success both at Berkeley and in the transition to UCSF. As Head of Clinical Partnerships, she organizes and oversees preceptorships and other clinical experiences, standardized patient exams at UCSF, and supports the JMP in building partnerships with local community health systems and providers. 

After graduating from Emory University School of Medicine, Shelene completed Internal Medicine and Global Health Equity residencies at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. During that time she received an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health, focusing her thesis on Quality Improvement in Interprofessional Education in Haiti. She came to the JMP from Weill Cornell Medicine/New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she served as an Assistant Professor in Hospital Medicine and the Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship. She is a dedicated clinician, providing in-patient care and residency education at Highland Hospital, a renowned regional safety net hospital and trauma center in the East Bay.
