A School for Changemakers

  • The new school-wide Changemaker Initiative equips students with a world-class public health education, and the knowledge, tools, and skills they need to help bring about real change in the world.

Continuing Leadership in COVID-19 Response

  • Professor Maya Petersen provided a computer model that guided San Francisco’s COVID response.
  • June 18 was named “Maya Petersen Day” in SF.
  • Professor Arthur Reingold led California’s COVID-19 Scientific Safety Review Workgroup.
  • Berkeley Public Health research revealed California farmworkers are disproportionately hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The largest study of its kind showed face masks reduce COVID-19.

Alumni Honors

  • Alum Kristen Hwang, MJ, MPH ’21 won the Student Academy Award for best documentary.
  • Mary Pittman, DrPH ’87, MPH ’80, was named a Top 25 Woman Leader by Modern Healthcare.
  • Laura Stachel, DrPH ’20, was named to Forbes 50 Under 50.
  • George Blue Spruce, MPH ’67, won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.

Anti-Racism Work

  • The school established a school-wide Anti-Racism Initiative.
  • The school welcomed new Chief of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, Ché L. Abram.

Student Life

  • There were 1,186 traditional students (graduate and undergraduate).
  • There were 305 online MPH students.
  • The student body is 47% students of color.
  • BPH welcomed 33 global health fellows from 11 countries.

Research News

  • The school received $30.8 million in research grants.
  • More than 500 papers were published in journals such as Science, Nature Medicine, and The Journal of Pediatrics.

Faculty Honors & News

  • Osagie Obasogie was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
  • Rachel Morello-Frosch was tapped for the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council.
  • Lonnie Snowden received the APHA Award for Lifetime Contributions to Mental Health.
  • Joseph Lewnard was named a 2021 Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine.

Top School

  • UC Berkeley was named the No. 1 public university worldwide by US News and World Report.
  • The school was ranked the No. 8 School of Public Health by US News and World Report.
  • The Online MPH program was ranked No. 1 by Higher Learning Today.

Fundraising

  • The school raised $20 million in individual donations and foundation and corporate grants.
  • Support was received from more than 2,611 individual donors.
