Dean Emeritus Stephen Shortell awarded Welch-Rose Award

Award for excellence in academic public health service bestowed annually by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health

The UC Berkeley School of Public Health is very pleased to announce that Stephen Shortell, PhD, MPH, MBA, UC Berkeley School of Public Health Dean Emeritus and Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management Emeritus, has been awarded the Welch-Rose Award for Excellence in Academic Public Health Service from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health.

“I am grateful and honored by this individual award, but I also view it as a collective award recognizing the contributions that our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have made to advancing the public’s health. We have been leaders in developing undergraduate majors in Public Health, online degree programs, concurrent and joint degrees, expanding enrollment of under-represented minority students, and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion while pushing the frontiers of discovery and knowledge on all fronts,” Dr. Shortell said.

The Welch-Rose Award is given to individuals who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions in advancing education in public health.

The award honors Drs. Wickliffe Rose and William Henry Welch, whose 1915 report to the Rockefeller Center became the template for public health professional education in the United States and abroad.
