Congratulations to Sandra McCoy, Berkeley Public Health professor of epidemiology and biostatistics, who has received a 2022 Berkeley Graduate Division Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of GSIs.

This award is presented annually to faculty members at UC Berkeley who have provided outstanding pedagogical mentorship to graduate student instructors. The award is sponsored by the Graduate Council’s Advisory Committee for GSI Affairs and the GSI Teaching & Resource Center; faculty mentors are nominated directly by their graduate students.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to help graduate student instructors become more effective teachers, to achieve their professional goals, and to foster supportive learning environments for the Berkeley Public Health community,” said Dr. McCoy. “I am deeply moved by this honor, as mentoring graduate students is a highlight of my professional activities at Berkeley.”

In her nomination for Dr. McCoy, epidemiology and biostatistics doctoral candidate Krista Neumann wrote, “One of the things that makes Dr. McCoy such a wonderful GSI mentor is her ability to balance the right amount of support and guidance with the space to allow us to lead and develop as teachers ourselves.”
