Doctoral candidate Waverly Wei wins Student Paper Award

The UC Berkeley School of Public Health is very pleased to announce Waverly Wei, a doctoral candidate in Biostatistics, is one of three winners of the Student Paper Awards at the American Statistical Association (ASA) Nonparametric Statistics Section.

“I am honored to receive this award,” Wei said. “As a junior researcher, it means a lot to gain recognition from other members in the field.”

Wei took the moment to thank mentors for their guidance. “Winning the award is truly a joint effort,” she said. “I would like to thank my advisor Dr. Jingshen Wang not only for her tremendous help on this award-winning paper, but also her scientific rigor. I benefit so much from Jingshen’s guidance. I genuinely appreciate Dr. Mark van der Laan for his valuable suggestions and innovative ideas on this work. I want to thank my collaborator Dr. Maya Petersen and other collaborators from outside the department for their great contribution. I also appreciate my co-advisor Dr. Alan Hubbard’s continued support throughout my PhD training.”

The paper discusses “a novel statistical methodology for efficiently estimating heterogeneous treatment effect,” Wei said. Wei added that the goal of the paper is to estimate the treatment effect of a cardiovascular drug on reducing Alzheimer’s disease risk.

Each of the winners will receive an award certificate, a $500 cash prize, and a one-year membership in the Nonparametric Statistics Section.

The award winners and finalists will present at a topic-contributed session at the 2022 Joint Statistical Meeting.
