Doctoral candidate Iemaan Rana named to Forbes 30 Under 30 list

Iemaan Rana, a doctoral candidate in Environmental Health Sciences at UC Berkeley School of Public Health and an MD candidate at University of Illinois College of Medicine, has been named one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Science for 2024.

Rana’s research is at the intersection of toxicology and technology, where she uses advanced learning algorithms to predict the cancer-causing potential of chemicals found in the environment. Her most-cited paper is a study on herbicides, the chemicals used to kill undesirable vegetation, and their association with cancer in the lymph system.

“All the credit for this achievement goes to my mentors, Professor Luoping Zhang and Professor Martyn Smith, who have taught me everything I know, advocated for me, and stood in my corner every step of the way,” said Rana.

Before starting her dual program, Rana received an MPH from Berkeley Public Health in 2020. She also received her bachelor’s degree in neurobiology from UC Berkeley.

“To my UC Berkeley family, I am deeply grateful for the support and encouragement I’ve received from each and every one of you,” Rana continued. “Your contributions have been invaluable, and I look forward to continuing this journey together.”
