Amani Allen awarded Chancellor’s Award for Institutional Excellence and Equity

We are pleased to announce that  Dr. Amani Allen, professor of Community Health Sciences and Epidemiology at Berkeley Public Health, was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Institutional Excellence and Equity in recognition of her work to advance anti-racism on campus.

An accompanying grant of $10,000 will go toward the management of Restoring Professional Accountability in Relationships (RePAIR), the School of Public Health’s new schoolwide training program for implementing restorative justice, with a lens on healing interpersonal relationships.

“I am so humbled by the unexpected news of this tremendous award and honor,” said Allen. “I have always considered it such a privilege to do the work I do—all of it, the scholarship, the teaching, and the service—and to do it at an institution I truly believe in (UC Berkeley and the School of Public Health). Having the opportunity to contribute and have real impact in each of these realms is a gift in itself. To be recognized this way, on top of that, is absolutely thrilling.”

“What I appreciate most about this award is its recognition of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, as woven throughout the university’s tripartite mission of research, teaching, and service,” she continued. “It both symbolizes and shines a light on the critical role of diversity, equity, and inclusion in realizing Berkeley’s excellence.”

The award will contribute to advancing Berkeley Public Health’s transformative antiracism-focused curriculum and communities, which will ultimately help inform curricular transformation and continue our work on changing our institutional culture.
