MPH and DrPH students apply public health skills and concepts outside the classroom setting and demonstrate competency attainment through the applied practice experience (APEx).
Applied Practice Experience
MPH
MPH students complete their APEx through a practicum at a host organization or through a project for a community-based organization within a service-learning course. For most programs, the practicum is coordinated through RISE: Berkeley Public Health Careers and Leadership Office. Students complete experiences that demonstrate attainment of at least five competencies, including at least three MPH Foundational Competencies. Students produce and are assessed on at least two work products for the host organization’s use and benefit.
DrPH
DrPH students complete their APEx through a residency at a host organization. Students complete experiences that demonstrate attainment of at least five competencies, including at least one competency related to leadership. Students produce and are assessed on work products for the host organization’s use and benefit, and on a reflective deliverable that includes the student’s personal and/or professional reactions to their experiences.
